ECQ Might Extend Until June 15th

The Metro’s top policymaking body will discuss on Saturday the possibility of extending the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in all 17 cities and the remaining municipality to June 15.This was according to Parañaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez, who is also the chair of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) composed of the 17 chief executives in the National Capital Region (NCR).Olivarez was the first mayor to express his support for the ECQ extension, citing the current situation in San Juan, Mandaluyong, Makati and Parañaque, which currently have the highest number of coronavirus cases per capita. | Source: Inquirer Net

Japan Approves Remdesivir For Use On Severe COVID-19 Patients

Japan approved the Gilead Sciences antiviral drug Remdesivir Thursday for treatment of severe COVID-19 patients, under an exceptional approval pathway based on clinical data from the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases’ phase three trial. 

The approval references the United States’ Emergency Use Authorization of the drug to treat severe cases of COVID-19. Japan and the United States are the only countries to authorize the use of Remdesivir for the treatment of COVID-19. Source: Forbes

Uber Lays Off 3,700; Airbnb Cuts 1,900 Staff

Uber said Wednesday it’s cutting 3,700 full-time workers, or about 14% of its workforce, as people fearful of infection either stay indoors or try to limit contact with others to minimize risk when they do venture out. Rival Lyft and home-sharing service Airbnb have also announced cuts because of falling usage. Source: Esquire PH

The LTO Is Extending the Validity of Expired Driver's Licenses and Penalties For Late Registration

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) announced on May 6 that the validity of driver’s licenses that have or are expiring during the enhanced community quarantine is extended to 60 days or two months beginning from the lifting of the quarantine. | Source: Esquire PH

PH COVID-19 Cases Exceed 10,000

On May 6, the Philippines exceeded 10,000 confirmed COVID-10 cases after 320 new cases were reported in one day. The total count is now at 10,004, with 1,506 recoveries and 658 deaths.

The Philippines’ recovery rate is now at 15.05 percent, with a fatality rate of 6.58 percent. While the national recovery rate is lower than the global average, which is 32.7 percent, the Philippines’ fatality rate is still lower than the global average, which is seven percent. Palace Issues Guidelines On Mall Operations During GCQ

  1. Monitor foot traffic and enforce safe distancing
  2. Designate a centralized pickup location for delivery service providers
  3. Regulate air conditioning to 26 degrees centigrade
  4. Turn off free Wi-Fi
  5. Suspend sale events, marketing events, and other promotions which tend to attract large crowds
  6. Implement other measures necessary (e.g. express lanes)
